Git Emergency

Git doesn't see my file rename (upper/lower case)

Severity Minor

What just happened

Windows and macOS ignore case in file names by default, so Git didn't record the rename. Linux servers do care.

Potential risks

  • Imports work on your machine and fail in production.

Before you run anything

  • Rename with git mv, not with the file explorer.

Recovery steps

  1. 1

    Rename through Git

    -f forces the rename even if only the case changes.

    Safe
    $ git mv -f src/components/Header.tsx src/components/header.tsx
    $ git commit -m "fix: rename Header.tsx to header.tsx"
  2. 2

    Check what Git really tracks

    The names as stored in the repository.

    Safe
    $ git ls-files src/components
