Git Emergency

I'm in “detached HEAD” state

Severity Minor

What just happened

HEAD points directly to a commit instead of a branch. You can look around and even commit, but those commits belong to no branch: switch away and they become hard to find.

Potential risks

  • Commits made here are garbage-collected after a few weeks if no branch points to them.

Before you run anything

  • Before switching branch, decide whether you want to keep what you did here.

Recovery steps

  1. 1

    Keep your work: create a branch here

    Your commits now belong to a real branch.

    Safe
    $ git switch -c rescue/detached-work
  2. 2

    Nothing to keep? Go back to your branch

    Returns to the branch you were on before.

    Safe
    $ git switch -
  3. 3

    Already switched away? Find the commits

    Git printed the hash when you left (“Warning: you are leaving 1 commit behind”). Otherwise, the reflog has it.

    Safe
    $ git reflog -n 20
    $ git branch rescue/detached-work <hash>
