Git Emergency

I deleted a branch on GitHub / GitLab

Severity Annoying

What just happened

Deleting a remote branch removes the server's reference. Commits still exist in every clone that fetched them, and for a while on the server.

Potential risks

  • git fetch --prune on your machine would also forget origin/branch.

Before you run anything

  • Don't prune until it's back.

Recovery steps

  1. 1

    Do you still have it?

    Local branch or remote-tracking copy.

    Safe
    $ git branch -a | grep feature
  2. 2

    Push it back

    From the local branch, or from origin/feature if you only have the tracking copy.

    Safe
    $ git push origin feature
    # or: git push origin origin/feature:refs/heads/feature
  3. 3

    Nobody has it?

    Safe

    On GitHub, open the closed pull request: a “Restore branch” button brings it back.
