Git Emergency

I need back the changes I reverted

Severity Minor

What just happened

Git considers the branch's commits already merged (the revert only undid their changes). To bring them back, you revert the revert.

Potential risks

  • None in particular: revert never rewrites history.

Before you run anything

  • Make sure the bug that caused the first revert is fixed.

Recovery steps

  1. 1

    Find the revert commit

    Its message starts with โ€œRevertโ€.

    Safe
    $ git log --oneline --grep="Revert" -n 10
  2. 2

    Revert the revert

    The original changes come back. Then merge the fixes as usual.

    Safe
    $ git revert <revert-commit-hash>
    $ git push
