Git Emergency

I committed with the wrong name or email

Severity Minor

What just happened

Git uses the user.name and user.email from your configuration. The wrong identity is now written in the commits.

Potential risks

  • An email in a public repository is public forever, even after rewriting.

Before you run anything

  • Fix the configuration first, or it will happen again.

Recovery steps

  1. 1

    Set the right identity for this repo

    Without --global: applies to this repository only.

    Safe
    $ git config user.name "Your Name"
    $ git config user.email "you@example.com"
  2. 2

    Fix the last commit

    Rewrites only the last commit. Avoid if it is already pushed.

    Caution
    $ git commit --amend --reset-author --no-edit
  3. 3

    Fix several unpushed commits

    Re-applies each commit since origin/main with the new identity.

    Caution
    $ git rebase origin/main --exec "git commit --amend --reset-author --no-edit"
