Git Emergency

I made a typo in a commit message

Severity Minor

What just happened

A commit message is part of the commit: changing it creates a new commit with a new hash. Easy locally, to coordinate if it's already pushed.

Potential risks

  • Rewriting a pushed commit forces a force push and disturbs teammates.

Before you run anything

  • A typo in an old pushed commit isn't worth a history rewrite. Let it live.

Recovery steps

  1. 1

    Last commit, not pushed

    Replaces the message of the last commit.

    Safe
    $ git commit --amend -m "feat: the right message"
  2. 2

    Older commit, not pushed

    In the editor, replace pick with reword on that commit's line, save, then write the new message.

    Caution
    $ git rebase -i HEAD~5
  3. 3

    Already pushed (your own branch)

    Only on a branch nobody else uses. Never on main.

    Caution
    $ git push --force-with-lease
