Git Emergency

I lost uncommitted changes

Severity Annoying

What just happened

Git only protects what it knows. Stashed or staged content usually leaves traces. Content that was never added is outside Git's reach.

Potential risks

  • Dangling objects are deleted by garbage collection after a while.

Before you run anything

  • Check your editor's local history and undo buffer first.

Recovery steps

  1. 1

    Check your stashes

    Maybe you stashed and forgot.

    Safe
    $ git stash list
    $ git stash show -p stash@{0}
  2. 2

    Recover a dropped stash

    Dropped stashes are dangling commits. Look for โ€œWIP on โ€ฆโ€ messages.

    Safe
    $ git fsck --no-reflog | grep 'dangling commit'
    $ git show <commit-hash>
    $ git stash apply <commit-hash>
  3. 3

    Recover staged files

    Anything that went through git add can be found as a blob.

    Safe
    $ git fsck --lost-found
    $ ls .git/lost-found/other
